Gerry Collins (politician)

Gerard Collins ( born October 16, 1938) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and a former minister.

Biography

Collins initially studied to become a teacher and then worked as a teacher.

His political career began on 9 November 1967, when he was first elected as the candidate of Fianna Fáil at a by-election for members of Dáil Éireann, where until 1997 he represented the interests of the constituency of Limerick West thirty years.

In 1969 he was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Jack Lynch to Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ). Already on May 9, 1970, he was appointed by Lynch as Minister for Posts and Telegraphs and held that office until the election defeat of Fianna Fáil on 14 March 1977.

After Lynch became prime minister again July 5, 1977, called this Collins Minister of Justice. This office he retained under Lynch's successor, Charles Haughey, to June 30, 1981. Haugheys In the second cabinet, he was from 9 March to 14 December 1982, Secretary of State.

As Haughey on March 10, 1987 for the third time prime minister, Collins took first again in this government the office of Minister of Justice, before February 11, 1992 he was on 12 July 1989 to the end of Haugheys tenure again foreign minister.

When he no longer took on elections to the 28th Dáil Éireann in 1997, instead ran his brother Michael J. Collins and won the mandate. Gerard Collins from 1994 to 2004 for two terms a member of the European Parliament.
