Gerry Hemingway

Gerry Hemingway ( born March 23, 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American jazz drummer.

Life and work

Hemingway was educated at Wesleyan College and Yale University. The mid-1970s he began in New Haven, together with trombonist George Lewis, pianist Anthony Davis and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. Together with Mark Helias & Ray Anderson he formed a working band, but took 1974 his plate Soloworks on the early his advanced handling sophisticated percussion technique and timing documented (previously three other recordings solo).

Hemingway also worked with Marilyn Crispell in a duo and with these and Anthony Braxton quartet. For many years he has a trio with the pianist and cellist Ernst Georg Gräwe Reijseger ( The View from Points West 1991), as well as a quintet with Reijseger, Wierbos Wolter, Michael Moore and Mark Dresser ( Demon Chaser, 1993 HatHut ); He also plays regularly in projects of Gratkowski and Judi Silvano. He also works in duos, such as with Thomas Lehn, Earl Howard and John Butcher. Furthermore, did the collaboration with Derek Bailey, Oliver Lake, Kenny Wheeler, Cecil Taylor, Don Byron, Rozanne Levine, John Cale, Céline Rudolph, Terrence McManus and Hank Roberts.
