Gersheim

Gersheim ( in dialect Gerschum ) is a municipality in Saarland, Germany. It lies about 20 km south of Homburg and 25 km south-east of the state capital of Saarbrücken.

Geography

Location

Gersheim located in Bliesgau, the southern part of the Saar Pfalz -Kreis. It is adjacent to a length of 13 km of the French department of Moselle, in addition to the community and the city Mandelbachtal Blieskastel. Gersheim is in the course of Bliesgau loop of Saarland circular trail. Through the town flows the assemblies.

The community consists of eleven districts: Bliesdalheim, Gersheim, East Melbourne, Niedergailbach, Medelsheim, Peppenkum, Clean Home, Rubenheim, Seyweiler, Utweiler and Walsheim.

History

Historical evidence of past eras can be found on communal land, particularly in European Cultural Park Bliesbruck - clean home where excavations from the Celtic and Roman times to visit. Particularly interesting is the Celtic princesses grave found in 1954. The grave mound of the princess and two others were passable reconstructed.

A Merovingian cemetery under the Walsheimer road and the ending- home speak for a foundation in the early Middle Ages (6th / 7th century ). Documentary mention is the place for the first time in 1150 as Geroldesheim.

As of 1798, the village belonged, like all the left bank of the Rhine to France. Due to the decisions on the Congress of Vienna ( 1815), the village was from 1816 a Bavarian community.

Between the 18th century and 1914 consisted in Gersheim a small Jewish community. In 1889/90, a synagogue was built in the Louis Street. After the dissolution of the community it was in 1919 converted into a residence. The building is now in the list of monuments of the Saarland.

After the Treaty of Versailles, the Saar was for a League of Nations mandate from 1920 to 1935 under French administration.

After the Saar Saar plebiscite in 1935 connected to the National Socialist German Reich. On 1 September 1939, the beginning of World War II, the village was evacuated. In December 1944, followed by a second evacuation. 1939 and 1945 experienced the place great destruction. This is the place lost most of its original character as a farming village.

From 1946 to 1957, the Saarland was an autonomous state under French protectorate. Following the referendum of 1955, the country acceded to the Federal Republic of Germany.

With the reorganization of the districts and municipalities in Saarland Gersheim, which belonged to the district of Sankt Ingbert previously was, on 1 January 1974 to a congregation of the Saar Pfalz -Kreis.

Nature and Landscape

In the district largely stands on the limestone. Located northwest of the village there is a large orchid area in which is home to over half of the identified in Germany orchids.

Ecological Schullandheim

In Gersheim Spohns house was developed into an environmental education center with a school camp. In an old farmhouse and a former school building opposite Spohns House offers overnight accommodation, utilities and training opportunities for about 80 visitors. Spohns house has the status of a registered association (eV ). Focal point in his eco- educational services is the area of education for sustainable development (ESD ).

  • Trofeo Karlberg: Held annually forming on Corpus Christi and the following weekend stage race for juniors. The race is part of the wheel of the Nation's youth, the highest category of UCI. The race series consists of six events worldwide. The Trofeo Karlberg is the only Junior Nations Cup race in Germany.
  • Gersheimer Theatre Week: Regularly at the beginning of the year ( over 20 years ), there is the event of the Cultural Office of the Municipality.
