Gerstheim

Gerst home is a commune with 3242 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region.

History

Gerstheim was first documented more than Gerbodesheim in 1066. Back then, most of the territory to the families of Bock and Berstett. It was also known by the family of those Geroldseck. Walter of Schwanau was known by its blockade of the waterways for the traders of his moated castle Schwanau and for his robberies. The castle was razed in 1333.

Religion

Gerstheim had no small Jewish population. The first synagogue was built in 1824 on the territory of today's cemetery. In 1874 a bridge subsequently elsewhere in the Rue du Rhin, built. He was born in 1966 canceled.

The members of the two Christian denominations used together a church building, it was decided to 1865 the building of a second church.

Attractions

The old inner city with the Lachter, also called Muhlbach, which once powered the mill of Gerstheim and provided for the electricity supply of the town, is a top tourist attraction and is referred to occasionally as Little Venice.

In the evangelical church is an organ of the Brothers Wetzel from the period around 1870. 1917 a part of the instrument was requisitioned by the German troops. 1926, the organ of Edmond Alexandre Roethinger was completed again. Presumably he has then also expanded. In 1972 a further restoration.

The fountain in front of the ballroom was awarded a prize in 2000.

An imposing building from the 18th century, which once belonged to the mayor Edouard Lauffenburger, is now owned by the city.

The Catholic Church, which was to be built according to the decision of 1865, was personal sacrifices of the citizens, because of lack of funds, the municipality had initially decided to build the tower and nave succession. After the private collection had not undertaken at the initiative of the minister Huss to the desired result, eventually it turned to Emperor Napoleon III. 1869 could decide to build the entire church after all. For the interior, the church was again dependent on private donations. In the night from 24 to 25 November 2011, the church was completely destroyed by fire. Since the Catholic church used again the Protestant Church Saint -Guillaume for worship that already two Christian confessions was available as so-called " simultaneous churches " until 1869.

Remains of the Maginot Line casemates and from the time of the Second World War are also located on the municipality.

Border crossing

In Gerstheim you could once cross the German -French border.
