Cycling career

Steegmans was 2003 professional with Lotto - Domo, since the 2007 season goes Gert Steegmans for the team Quickstep Innergetic to Tom Boonen. In the U23 class he could Omloop 2001 Het Volk win and in 2002 the Belgian championship. His first professional victory he celebrated at the 2005 Tour de Picardie with a stage win, and he later went on to win the Belgian one-day races National Sluitingsprijs. In the Algarve Tour 2006 Steegmans won two stages and a close second behind João Cabreira, on the last day with a stage victory snatched him the leadership position. In March 2006, his home was searched during a raid by Belgian police, because it was suspected that he had to do with doping. In the Tour of Belgium, he won the final stage.

In the 2007 Tour de France he won the second stage just ahead of his teammate Tom Boonen. The following year, he was also able to re- decide a stage of the Tour de France itself. He reached for the 21 stage on the Champs-Elysees in Paris as the first target.

Because he refused to sign an anti- doping confession Katjuscha Steegmans ruled out for the 2009 Tour de France.
