Gertrude of Aldenberg

Gertrude of Altenberg ( * September 29 1227 in Thuringia; † August 13, 1297 in Kloster Altenberg, Solms ) is a Roman Catholic blessed and was a Prämonstratenserin.

Life

Gertrude was the youngest daughter of St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) and the Landgrave Ludwig IV, who died a few weeks before she was born. With two years ( other sources speak of 18 months or 4 years ), she was given to the monastery of Altenberg near Wetzlar, where he was Prämonstratenserin. From 1248 Gertrude was the champion of this Order Convention in Altenberg. They prompted the creation of two infirmaries, where they took care of those affected. Gertrude died at the age of 70 years. She brought the precious Armreliquar her mother, Saint Elizabeth, to the convent of Altenberg, from where it is in 1803 with the last nun to the Prince of Sayn -Wittgenstein- Sayn, the direct descendants of Saint Elizabeth, to Bendorf reached where it is still is.

Grave

Gertrud is now in a Tumbengrab in the choir of the church of the monastery of Altenberg near Wetzlar / Solms- Oberbiel buried. The Tumba of 1334 bears the inscription ANNO DOMINI IN THE MCCXCVII BEATI YPOLITI OBIIT BEATA GERTRVDIS FELIX MATER HVIVS CONVENTVS FILIA sancte ELISABET LANDGRAVIE THURINGIE ( = in the year of our Lord 1297, on the day of Blessed Hypolitus ( August 13 ) died the blessed Gertrudis, the happy mother of the Convention, the daughter of Saint Elizabeth, Countess of Thuringia).

Beatification

A short time after her death in 1297 Gertrud was worshiped at Altenberg. Pope Clement V allowed in a report issued at December 18, 1311 deed Altenberg Convention, the annual festival to celebrate Gertrude solemnly. An immediate act of beatification is not known. The inscription on the Grabtumba Altenberg 1334 called Gertrud already blessed. The alleged Gertrude beatification by Pope Clement VI. 1348 is based on a modern forgery. Nevertheless, August 13 is celebrated to this day as a memorial for Blessed Gertrude. The Catholic community then organized a pilgrimage to the present Protestant monastery church to the grave of Gertrude.
