Gervaise of Bazoches

Gervaise Bazoches († May 1108 in Damascus ) was a French Crusader and Prince of Galilee.

Gervaise was from Bazoches- sur- Vesles (now Canton Braine ), where his older brother Hugo was Lord. Gervaise itself was first advocate in Mont -Notre -Dame. 1098 he joined the First Crusade, with whom he came to Jerusalem. There he was an official under King Baldwin I died in 1106 as Hugh of St Omer in Muslim captivity, Baldwin Gervaise appointed to succeed him as Prince of Galilee. Perhaps already in 1104, but no later than Hugo's death Gervaise was also Hugo's successor as Seneschal of Jerusalem.

In May 1108 Gervaise was defeated with a troop of eighty knights and two hundred infantry in battle against Tugtakin, the Atabeg of Damascus. Gervaise was, like his predecessor, taken prisoner. Tugtakin demanded the surrender of the cities of Acre, Haifa and Tiberias in exchange for his release. King Baldwin refused to do so and instead offered a ransom in silver coins. Gervaise was then, like his predecessor, was executed.

After his death Tancred of Taranto was again Prince of Galilee, who had been from 1100 to 1101 occupied the principality.
