Geography

Geschwenda is located on the northern slope of the Thuringian Forest in about 470 m altitude. The town is crossed by random stream, a tributary of the Tame Gera. West of Geschwenda is the Old Castle, a 635 meter high mountain, after a 874 m long tunnel of A is 71 named. To the south lies the treeless, 496 m high mountain Geschwendaer. North is also treeless, 524 m high mountain ridge.

History

On the Dörrenberg southwest of Geschwenda was with the Old Castle (also known as Castle of prey ) a base to control and secure the trade route between Gera mountain and the Thuringian Forest on the pass decorations. The castle was from the 12th century. Beginning of the 20th century, the buildings and walls were removed as far as possible.

The village was mentioned in documents in 1302 Gyswende first time in the notation. Geschwenda once belonged to the Barons of Bellmont and after their extinction 1829-1920 to Schwarzburg- Arnstadt Special Housing Office. The place was a schwarzburgische exclave, as it was separated from the rest of black burg area.

Geschwenda 1665-1677 was affected by witch hunts. In nine witch trials, seven women were burned.

Geschwenda was 1887 with 1259 inhabitants, is the largest village in the Schwarzburg- Sondershäuser supremacy. From 1920 to 1952 it belonged to the district of Arnstadt, 1952-1994 Ilmenau to the circle and since 1994 Ilm-Kreis. Geschwenda of the joint management Upper Geratal has joined with headquarters in Gräfenroda.

Partnerships

Since November 3, 1990, there is a partnership agreement with the municipality Diemelsee in Hesse. Other partnerships exist with the southern French community Belge animal and since 11 November 2010 with the southern English community Ringmer since 14 October 2006.

Culture and sights

  • Geschwenda has a historic center with its typical of the Thuringian Forest region slate -clad houses.
  • In the center the large, built in the late Baroque style from 1741 by Gottfried Heinrich Krohne and well preserved Nikolai Church and the over 300 year old rectory dominated. In the church interior of the baptismal font from 1618 with brass shell is particularly worth seeing. School History

In 1743 the newly built church tower struck at the school next to it and destroyed the school building. 1886 a new school building was built opposite the church, which today houses the medical center. In 1904 again a new school was built, this was in the period of inflation at the beginning of the 1920s, a further, comprehensive four rooms wings. The lack of classrooms in 1985 solved by the extension of the school building with six additional classrooms and sanitary facilities.

In the context of an action of the EU program " Socrates " partnerships exist between the present State Primary School Geschwenda and schools in Belgium, Denmark, Northern Ireland and England.

Economy and Transport

Geschwenda is an economically strong community that has several nationally operating companies with companies KHW plastic and wood processing factory GmbH, steel production and mining engineering GmbH, the listed companies Geratherm, environmental Senor GmbH and numerous other companies. South of the town, just off the A71 lies the industrial area Geschwendas in which many medium-sized companies have settled.

Since 2004 Geschwenda has a ring road on which the B 88 Ilmenau - Gotha runs. There is also the 235 meter long, 40 meter high viaduct random. About two kilometers to the south is the A71 - exit Gräfenroda. Further still, there is a road to Angelroda. A rail connection had never Geschwenda, the breakpoint Dörrenberg on the railway line Neudietendorf - Ritschenhausen is only about 1.5 km west of the village.
