Gevgelija

Gevgelija (Cyrillic Гевгелија ) is a city in the region Bojmija in southeastern Macedonia and capital of the same name Opština.

Geography

The city of Gevgelija is located near the Greek border, on the highway Athens -Belgrade, on the right bank of the Vardar. Nearby there are the mountains Koruf and Pajak. Gevgelija is located around 70 km north-west of Thessaloniki, around 165 km south-east of the Macedonian capital Skopje.

The area of 483.43 km ² with Opština comprises 17 villages.

Population

The Opština Gevgelija 2002 had just 22,988 inhabitants, of whom 15,685 lived alone in the city of Gevgelija.

Ethnic about 96 percent of city residents are among the Macedonians.
