Ghemme

Ghemme ( Ghem Piedmontese ) is a municipality with 3670 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Novara (NO ), Region Piedmont. There, the wine of the same also is grown.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the river Sesia and consists of the districts Strona and Ghemme. The neighboring municipalities are Carpignano Sesia, Cavaglio d' Agogna, Fontaneto d' Agogna, Gattinara, Lenta, Romagnano Sesia and Sizzano.

History

The first time was mentioned in the year 1000 Ghemme in writing in a document. In the 15th century had different families from Novara and Milan houses and land in Ghemme. Throughout history, was the site of various feudal families, among others, the Tettoni (16th - 17th century), the Homodei (17th century), the Modegnani ( 18th century).

Attractions

The parish church of Madonna Assunta was built on the site of an earlier church from 1666. As of 1720, the façade was built in 1731 and the church was consecrated. The main altar dates from 1763rd The tower was built from 1664 to 1665 and from 1879 to 1884 fitted with a new tip.

For the local patron saint, the Blessed Panacea, a sanctuary was a native of the architect Alessandro Antonelli built Ghemme ( Scurolo della Beata Panacea ), in which their remains are kept.

Traffic

West and north- west of the town runs the Autostrada A 26, to which it is connected via the connection point Romagnano Sesia Ghemme. Novara lies about 25 km south-west and is connected to the city by the Strada Statale 299. In Ghemme there is also a station on the railway track Novara - Varallo Sesia.

Personalities

  • Alessandro Antonelli (1798-1888), one of the most important architects of the 19th century, the Mole in Turin planned, among other things, was born in Ghemme.
