Gheorghe Hagi

Gheorghe Hagi ( born February 5, 1965 in Săcele circle Constanţa ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach.

Hagi is considered the greatest player of Romanian football history and was put on the list of Pele the FIFA 100. In addition, the stadium of FC Farul Constanta was named after him on 26 April 2000.

Club career

Hagi started his football career in 1978 at FC Constanţa under the guidance of Iosif Bükössy. After a one year interlude at the football school of Luceafarul Bucharest, he returned to the Black Sea coast, where he made his debut on September 11 during the 1982 game against SC Bacau in Divizia A at the age of 17 years. Career as a coach

In July 2001, Hagi started his coaching career as coach of Romania. However, after only four games he resigned because of failing to qualify for the World Cup 2002. In June 2003 he took over the Turkish Erstligamannschaft Bursaspor as a coach, but even here he was able to hold for lack of success only six months. The breakthrough came in February 2004 when he took over as coach of his former club Galatasaray. In this office he received on 11 May 2005 with a historic 5-1 victory in the final of the Turkish Cup against arch-rivals Fenerbahce his first major title as a club coach. However, he resigned after he failed to reach the Champions League qualification in the championship and Fenerbahçe won the league title. Also problems with the club's management and the fans were a reason for his resignation. He was succeeded by the Belgian Eric Gerets.

In November 2005, Hagi returned as manager of FCU Politehnica Timişoara in Romania. He did not succeed to lead the club into the UEFA Cup. Two games left in the season, the club parted from him. On June 23, 2007, he became coach of the Romanian championship record Steaua Bucharest. He succeeds by Cosmin Olăroiu. After only six league and five European games he appeared on September 20, 2007 - the day after the opening defeat in the Champions League at Slavia Prague - due to persistent differences with the management back.

Others

On 29 September 2008 Hagi was appointed UNICEF ambassador. In 2008 he founded the Academia de Fotbal Gheorghe Hagi, a football school in Ovidiu. In summer 2009, he bought the local CS Ovidiu from his inaugural law for the league III and had instead commence a newly founded club called FC Viitorul Constanta.
