Band History

The Ghymes ensemble was formed in 1984 from the College of Education in Nitra from musicians who had previously devoted to rock music, classical music, or of Renaissance music. You should play the accompaniment music for a dance group that never came about. Your wording is derived from an eponymous, small village (Hungarian Ghymes, since 1948 Slovak Jelenec ) from near Nitra.

From the ensemble with traditional Hungarian folk music from Transylvania. They made so at the dance house movement that conquered the Hungarian student subculture in the 70s. While Ghymes was initially a dance band, the group went late 80s through to play concerts in particular. At this stage, the musicians decided also to become professionals.

This year they presented for a time " cleansing fire " which they linked slow folkloric elements and own creative ideas with each other. So the very own style of music from Ghymes was born. The rhythms were more engaging, harder, and to the original folk instruments violin, viola, dulcimer, bagpipe, contrabass, lute, koboz ( the lute related ) Tökcitera (pumpkin zither), Tárogató ( beak flute) were added saxophone and percussion improvisations were created, and without realizing it, or to follow this deliberately, they found themselves in the category of so-called world music again.

During this time, the Ghymes Ensemble also participated in the successful throughout Europe production Vents D' est ( east wind ). The multi-colored ( folk, jazz, contemporary music) and in terms of their origin versatile ( Mediterranean, Serbian, Croatian, Hungarian and Slovak ) Music of the 17 -member international band itself forms an unusual in its form "Music Mosaic ". The "father" of the band and its director is the Franco- Occitan musician and composer Miqueu Montanaro. In 1991, the Hungarian and French television produced a movie about this band. In 1993, the first Vents D'est CD was titled Migration, 1996 was the second picture. At the request Montanaros towards the Ghymes ensemble in 1993 participated in the realization of the music for the largest European open-air theater event at the " Theatre de la Mediterranée ".

Despite these activities at European level Ghymes managed the big breakthrough in Hungary in 1998 with the title TANC a Hoban (dancing in the snow ) from the album rules, since the one of the greatest Hungarian folk-rock songs. At this time, won their monthly club nights in Budapest an enormous popularity. Whereas in 1996 just a few dozen people attended these evenings, the tickets were sold out for about 400-500 people comprehensive Halle weeks earlier in 2001.

The pinnacle of world music stage was the album Smaragdváros published in November 2000. In the European world music ranking (World Music Charts Europe ) it came eleventh in March 2001 - the biggest and most measurable in numbers of international success Ghymes. The most beautiful song in this album ( Szárnyaskezű szeretők ) also achieved a single release and the shooting of a music video.

After these successes began in the musical development of a slow movement toward jazz, the original folkloric elements still remained in each album in several titles. A comparison of the two most recent albums ( Üvegtigris 2 and Messzerepülő ) is published 5-6 years ago with the plates, therefore, hardly possible, what long-time fans sometimes complain.

Remains As much as their music ever changed, unchanged, the children love the group. In addition to the two children's songs collections Bennünk van a kutyavér and Csak a világ végire ..., they also played music to accompany the two tales albums on which Hungarian artist reciting short tales and stories. Furthermore, they give every year several concerts especially for children.
