Giaan Rooney

Giaan Leigh Rooney ( * November 15, 1982 in Brisbane ) is a former Australian swimmer who specializes in the back and freestyle tracks.

She lives in Melbourne, where she trained, among others, Matt Welsh, and Michael Klim. After the Commonwealth Games 2006, she retired from active swimming, in order to concentrate on her career on TV. There, she now works as a presenter for sports and health magazines. She also competed at the Australian Varaiante of Stars in part on ice.

Achievements

  • Gold medals at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur the 100m backstroke and the 4 x 100 meter medley relay
  • Silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 with the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay
  • World Champion in 2001 in Fukuoka over 200 meters freestyle
  • Olympic champion in Athens in 2004 with the 4 x 100 meter medley relay
  • World Champion in 2005 in Montreal about 50 meters back
  • Silver medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on 50 & 100 meter backstroke
