Giacobbe Cervetto

Giacobo Basevi detto Cervetto, later also called Cervetto the Elder (c. 1682 in Italy; † January 14, 1783 in London ) was an Italian cellist and composer.

Life

Giacomo or Giacobo Bassevi Cervetto, came from a Jewish family based in Verona. After his education he worked first in Italy, was a musician, and as a dealer for Italian musical instruments to England, where he was from 1748 a member of the Drury Lane Theatre at the latest, on the authority of Fétis 1728 or 10 years later, he has this orchestra some years conducted what is now refuted. Later, he had a steady job in the opera orchestra of Handel.

He created essentially works for one to three cellos and basso continuo. Through numerous concerts he made his instrument in England, where long the viol had a dominant role known. The cellist Nochez was one of his pupils, as his son James Cervetto (* January 8, 1748; † February 5, 1837 ), which he a fortune of more than £ 20,000 left when he died at the age of 101 years, he was also a composer and cellist.
