Gianfranco Ravasi

Cardinal Ravasi Gianfranco ( born October 18, 1942 in Merate, Lombardy, Italy ) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Ravasi received on June 28, 1966 by Giovanni Cardinal Umberto Colombo, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Gianfranco Ravasi was prefect of the Ambrosian Library and professor of Biblical exegesis at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy in Milan. He is a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. Ravasi mastered a dozen ancient and modern languages. He is the author of numerous books. He was longtime commentator on the Sunday readings on Italian television.

On 22 June 1995 by Pope John Paul II elevated the Apostolic prothonotary. Ravasi wrote in 2007 for Benedict XVI. the meditations for the Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum.

Pope Benedict XVI. appointed him on 3 September 2007, succeeding Paul Cardinal Poupard President of the Pontifical Council for Culture and Titular Archbishop of Villamagna in Proconsulari. Furthermore, Gianfranco Ravasi was President of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church and President of the Pontifical Commission for Christian Archaeology. He received his episcopal consecration Benedict XVI. on 29 September 2007 at St. Peter's Basilica. Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone were co-consecrators and Marian Cardinal Jaworski.

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Giorgio in Velabro in the College of Cardinals.

Since November 20, 2007 he is a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and since December 11, 2010 Member of the Congregation for Catholic Education.

On 11 February 2011 he turned out to be president of the Pontifical Council for Culture in the debate on the model of multiculturalism, which had previously been told by a number of European leaders failed. He joined this perception, saying instead for interculturality and announced an official Vatican document on this. In February 2013 he stood before the annual papal Lenten retreat.

Ravasi is honor - Konventualkaplan of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
