Gianluca Petrella

Gianluca Petrella (* March 1975 in Bari ) is an Italian jazz trombonist.

Life and work

Petrella finished his studies in 1994 at the Conservatory in Bari with top marks. In 1993 started his collaboration with saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano (with whom he his first recording "Hybrid and Hot " 1994 Splash, made ). In the same year he made a recording with saxophonist Greg Osby ( " Do it " 1994 Right Tempo). From 1995 he was first trumpet in the " OFP " orchestra, which was temporarily under the direction of Carla Bley, Steve Coleman and Bruno Tommaso. Also in 1995 he was on the compilation CD "Italian Jazz Today '' magazine Musica Jazz. In 1997, he remained at some time in Germany and the Netherlands and toured with Enrico Rava in Canada. In 2000 he was a member of the French Orchestre National de Jazz under Paolo Damiani (eg " Charmediterranéan " ECM 2001, Brahem and Gianluigi Trovesi ). He played with almost all important Italian jazz musicians, including 2001 at the Town Hall in New York with the Quintet of Enrico Rava. Currently ( 2007) he plays with "Indigo 4" (Francesco Bearzatti, saxophone, Paolino Dalla Porta, Bass, Fabio Accardi, drums), with the " Bread and Tomato Trio" (Michele Papadia, Hammond organ, Fabio Accardi, drums ) in a duo with pianist Antonello Salis and accordionist ( " Rinoceronto sul Limbara " In 2003, Time in Jazz ) and the " Domino Quartet" (Sean Bergin, Antonio Borghini, Hamid Drake ). With Indigo 4 he took a 2005 album as a leader for Blue Note Records on ( "Indigo 4"), followed by " Kaleido " 2007. As a guest soloist of Jazz Bigband Graz in 2011, he worked at the album Urban Folktales (ACT ) with.

In 2007 he received the Eurodjango and the " Paul Acket Award", the successor of the Dutch Bird Awards.
