Giarre

Giarre is a city in the Province of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, with 28,083 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Giarre located 30 km north of Catania on the eastern slope of Mount Etna. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and trade.

The neighboring municipalities are Acireale, Mascali, Milo, Riposto, Sant'Alfio, Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea.

History

The place was until 1815 depending on the village of Mascali. Originally Giarre and Riposto districts of the town of Mascali. 1915, the municipalities and Riposto Giarre were self-employed, were reunited in 1945 and finally to independent communities.
