Gibson Gowland

Gibson Gowland (born 4 January 1877 in Spennymoor, County Durham, † September 9, 1951 in London ) was an English actor. He appeared in more than 80 films.

Life

Gowland came in 1913 via Canada to the United States. In Hollywood he found in 1914 during the filming of The Birth of a Nation working as an extra. In the 1910s he often performed under the name " TH Gibson Gowland ", providing his name was ever mentioned in the film. He became the supporting actor and was used among others by Erich von Stroheim in Blind Husbands (1919) as a mountain guide. In the early 1920s, Gowland was occupied in some leading roles. He played his most famous role in this period: John McTeague in Stroheim's Greed magnum opus ( 1924). This hulking movie character, a dentist without approval is driven to madness and murder by his greedy - greedy wife (played by ZaSu Pitts ). By the end of the silent era embodied Gowland rough types in supporting roles.

1934 to 1938 he spent in England and played in British films, 1940, he returned to the United States. His film appearances that time were so small that his name was usually not even mentioned in the film credits. After two failed marriages to 1944 Gowland was finally back in his home country down.

His son Peter Gowland (1916-2010) was a photographer.
