Gibson Mansion

The Gibson Mansion ( which is now used as a Yolo County Historical Museum ) is a historic mansion in Woodland, California. He is listed in the National Register of Historic Places since November 7, 1976.

History

William Byas Gibson came from Virginia into Yolo County and settled at this point, which was at that time outside of Woodland, in 1850 down to grow crops and four breeding. In 1857 he bought 128 acres south of Woodland land on which was a small house. This land was later the center of his extensive 1200 hectare land. As his family grew and their wealth increased, he expanded the house several times in the 1870s and built it into a mansion. Gibson died in 1901, his family lived in it until 1963. Until 1975 no one cared about the estate and the surrounding lands, so that the building fell slowly. In this time the house of some was declared a haunted house. 1975 succeeded the Yolo County Historical Society to purchase the house and an acre of land to renovate it and to establish a historical museum for the county here. The Yolo County Historical Museum Association was formed, through which the museum is managed today. The museum is open to the public on the weekends.
