Gideon ( גדעון, Hebrew "hackers, Lumberjack, destroyer " epithet Jerubbaal by Ri 6.32 EU) is an Old Testament judge, says the Book of Judges in Ri 6.11 to 8.35 across the EU.

Gideon the son of Joash, was appointed by YHWH by an angel to deliver the Israelites from the yoke of the Midianites.

According to the biblical narrative, he asked God to confirm him his job with a character and put a fleece on the threshing floor, which should be wet with the dew overnight. The next morning he found the fleece actually wetted in the otherwise arid surroundings dew. Bernard of Clairvaux used this parable as an allegory for the Immaculate Conception in St. Mary's symbolism.

By divine instruction Gideon tore down the altar and the pillar cult of Baal - worship. " Therefore she called Gideon Jerubbaal since that day - that is, Baal may argue against him - because he hath thrown down his altar " (Judges 6.32 EU). After the victory over the Midianites, Gideon refused the kingship from, but asked his people to give him a portion of the captured gold of Midian, from which he made an ephod, apparently an idol, for it is said, "And all Israel went there so idolatry. That brought Gideon and his house to case " (Ri 8.27 EU).

Gideon died at a great age in his hometown of Ofra. After his death the Baal cult lives on again. His son Abimelech became his successor.
