Word origin and spelling

This contrasts with the derivation as Pfropfwort (short word that is identical to an existing word with a different meaning ) counter: So Mugge is a shortening of "musical business opportunity " or " music for money " on the dialectal form Mugge for the word mosquito.

The encyclopedia of popular music leads the spellings Mugge and Mucke equal. " Snags " have therefore already in the 18th century as much as " begging " in the jargon of the mendicant musicians, the connection with the " musical business opportunity " was already detectable for the time shortly after 1900.
