Gil Goldstein

Gil Goldstein ( born November 6, 1950 in Washington, DC) is an American jazz and fusion accordionist, keyboardist and pianist.

Life and work

Even as a child learned Goldstein accordion playing, and later cello and piano. He studied at the Berklee College of Music and has worked since 1973 with Pat Metheny, Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter, and others.

He played at the beginning of the 1980s in Billy Cobham's jazz-rock formation Glass Menagerie. As one of the rare accordion in jazz, he worked with Bob Berg (1994 ), Jim Hall (1995) and Eliane Elias (1996 ) together. He also accompanied Michel Petrucciani and Richard Galliano on tours.

In the late 1980s he belonged to the last Gil Evans band and played after Evans ' death in the album A Tribute to Gil 1988. In 1993 he founded the Zebra Coast Orchestra, played in musicians such as Jorge Pardo, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Don Alias ​​and Mino Cinelu. In addition, he served as keyboardist and pianist with numerous jazz and fusion recordings by such diverse musicians such as Bernard Purdie, Randy Brecker, Eddie Harris ( The Last Concert, 1996), Didier Lockwood, Joe Lovano, Helen Merrill, Pat Metheny (Secret Story, 1991), Bob Mintzer, Claudio Roditi, Wallace Roney, David Sanborn, Mike Stern and Lenny White, and as an arranger for the SFJAZZ Collective. In 1991 he participated in the concert Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux.

Goldstein also worked on film projects, such as De -Lovely, the Cole Porter Story, where he played the song " I Love Paris ", as well as in Little Buddha as an arranger. He won three Grammy Awards; two for the production and the arrangement of Michael Brecker album Wide Angles ( 2003).

In 2007, he was on the album Your Songs: The Music of Elton John involved ( ObliqSound ) with Steve Swallow, Paul Motian and the Italian saxophonist Pietro Tonolo. The Quartet played jazz arrangements of some of the most popular songs by Elton John.

His collaboration with Bobby McFerrin in the album Spirityouall earned him another Grammy Award in 2014. When piece Swing Low by McFerrin with Esperanza Spalding, he was awarded the Arrangement ( Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals).

Goldstein is a professor at New York University.
