Gil Vicente

Gil Vicente ( * um 1465, † 1536) was a Portuguese playwright, whose origin is unclear. He is considered the founder of the national theater and one of the outstanding writers of the Portuguese language. His extensive body of work includes 46 plays, which were written in Portuguese, 11 in Castilian (Spanish ) and the remaining 19 16 in both languages.

He is considered a deep thinker and biting satirist. His work is a rich source for the study of the Portuguese language, the contemporary practices and social life of the era.

Much more than the actual person of Gil Vicente is still unclear and remains so probably forever. So it is not clear whether the writer and the same name, known goldsmith were one and the same person. Masterpiece of the latter is the famous monstrance of Hieronymus Monastery in Belém ( Lisbon).

The daughter of the writer, Paula, has contributed to the breakdown of his work, the first complete compilation was not released until 1562.
