Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke

Gilbert Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke († June 27, 1241 ), was an English peer and hereditary Lord Marshal of England. He was the third son of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare.

Gilbert initially proposed a clerical career. But after his older brothers William and Richard in 1231 had died in 1234 without an heir, he inherited the dignity of Earl of Pembroke. On August 1, 1235 he married the Princess Marjorie († 1244), a daughter of King William I of Scotland. Together with his brother Richard of Cornwall in 1236 he took the cross, but did not participate in its crusade to Palestine.

Matthew Paris reported by Gilbert's death when he was a unknown to him Italian steed rode in a tournament near Hertford, that dropped him at full gallop and stomped to death. He was buried beside his father in the Temple Church of London. Since he had no children, his brother Walter inherited his titles and estates.
