Gilberto Mendes

Gilberto Mendes ( born October 13, 1922 in Santos) is a Brazilian composer.

Mendes studied with Cláudio Santoro and George Olivier Toni and was at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music student of Henri Pousseur and Pierre Boulez. In 1965 he founded in Santos Festival of New Music. In the 1970s and 1980s, he taught at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Texas, after he was professor of music at the University of São Paulo.

He composed cantatas and motets in addition to instrumental works. In addition to classical instruments he sat in his compositions also sounds of vacuum cleaners, food processors, washing machines and televisions and text montages.
