Giles of Viterbo

Giles de Viterbo, also Egidio da Viterbo (c. 1469 in Viterbo, Italy, † November 12, 1532 in Rome), was a cardinal, theologian and humanist.

Aegidius ' parents were not wealthy. Therefore, he entered the Augustinian order in June 1488. After his studies at the Augustinians in Viterbo, he became a doctor of theology. 1506 he was at the death of the religious Priors General of the Augustinians. Funded by Pope Julius II, he was elected three times to the Prior General, namely 1507, 1511 and 1515th In addition to the bishopric of Viterbo other benefices him were yet to be issued.

Aegidius participated in the council of the year 1512 part in the Lateran, where he was praised by his bold and serious remarks at the opening of the council in church history. Pope Leo X appointed him a cardinal in 1517, later appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bartolomeo all'Isola and gave him in 1524 the title of the Latin Patriarch of Constantinople Opel, which was, however, awarded for a long time only to the after the fourth crusade legitimate claim for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel to maintain. Leo X. sent him as legate to the Spanish king Charles, who soon as German Emperor Charles V should be.

Giles stood up for genuine reform of the ecclesiastical states, and Pope Hadrian sent a memorandum. He was universally esteemed in the College of Cardinals and some contemporaries suspected that he would succeed Pope Clement VII.

Aegidius studied Hebrew at Elijah Levita, who for 10 years was staying after his departure from Padua with his family at his home. During this time Levita worked as a teacher of Roman notables for the customs and teachings of the Jews. Levitas published in Rome in 1518 Bahur work is dedicated Aegidius, as his work Concordancia from the year 1521.

From Aegidius ' writings, which included almost all areas of contemporary knowledge, little is received, partly because he had only a few print, partly because a large part in the sack of Rome in 1527 was destroyed. In recent times, many art historians believe that the theological- philosophical imagery of the Raphael frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura the Vatican is crucial inspired by him.
