The Gilfert is a 2,506 meter high mountain in the Tux Alps. He is the projecting furthest north part of the Rastkogelbahn massif and can therefore be seen from the lower Inn valley from almost anywhere.

Location and landscape

The summit bears a large cross on the summit, as well as the two northwestern lower summit (weather cross) and the northeastern Sonntagsköpfl ( 2,244 m). Scored in the eastern flank is Kar, a closed almost three-quarters rock basin. It drains through the Lamarkbach the lower Zillertal.

Although the massif Gilfert - Rastkogelbahn has a very pronounced, several times branching ridge, the rock walls are mostly oriented in a north-south direction. This geological feature is the heavily indented mountain group has its own character.

Ways

The summit of Gilfert is Innerst at Weerberg ( southern slope of the Inn valley ) on the NonSalm ( 1,785 m) to reach not difficult. The route Innerst - NonSalm is often climbed in winter and spring with skis or snowshoes, because the increase is relatively safe from avalanches. A second ascent leads from the district capital Schwaz Pill or almost parallel to the summit.

Ski or reserve?

About the development of the Gilfert as ski (see also years of debate on the expansion of Kellerjochgebietes ), or the designation as a protected area, has been discussed for many years. For a long time a rest area Gilfert was - Rastkogelbahn being considered, on the other hand the Inn Valley communities to Weer strive to achieve access to the ski Hochfuegen- Zillertal, Appendices would open up the ridge. A spatial planning policy decision on the future of central Tux Alps stands out.
