The 240- kilometer-long river Gilgit ( Urdu: دریائے گلگت Darya -e Gilgit; Gahkuch above the river is called Ghizer ) originates at Shandur Lake on a mountain plateau. The Shandur plateau to the lake is 3728 m above sea level at the Shandur Pass in Pakistan. The lake in the Hindu Kush is located on the pass route, connecting the towns of Chitral and Gilgit.

The river flows from Gilgit Shandur Lake in northwest direction to the same city, which is located in Gilgit- Baltistan, the former Pakistani northern areas in the Kashmir region. Then flows into the river in the Indus. On the river rafting trips are undertaken.

At the Shandur plateau, on which the Shandur Lake is held each year since 1936, a polo tournament after historic rules instead, which has been expanded to include an open- air festival for several years.
