Gille Críst, Earl of Mar

Gille Crist, and Gilchrist (* unknown; † 1211-1228 ), 3rd Earl of Mar, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

The name Gille Crist appeared in connection with the title of Earl of Mar for the first time in 1169 after allegations of illegitimacy over its predecessor Morggán on. However, King William the Lion confirmed on the basis of a document from the year 1171 the legality of the title was awarded to Morggán.

From 1182 until the death of Morggán led Gille Crist the title of Earl of Mar, all documents with his signature date from the time after that. Between 1182 and 1199 he can be found on various documents as a signature witness or as patrons. During this time he supported the construction of the hospital of St. Peter, the foundation of the priory of Monymusk and the construction of churches in Alford, Ruthven and Invernochty. The right to the patronage of the church of Aberchirder (now Marnoch ) it was after a dispute between King William and Bricius de Douglas, Bishop of Moray, however, denied. But in return he received in the years 1203-1207 all rights to the Abbey of Arbroath.

Gille Crist was married to Orabile, daughter of Nes, son of William. From this marriage came at least four sons and a daughter, but they all did not survive him.

His disappearance is as mysterious as his appearance. Only in 1228 the title of Donnchadh was passed, but all traces of Gille Crist end up with an entry in the Breviary of Coupar from the year 1211.
