Gilles Bernheim

Gilles Bernheim (* May 30, 1952 in Aix -les- Bains ) is a French rabbi. He was elected in June 2008 for the Chief Rabbi ( Grand Rabbi ) of France. His term began in January 2009.

Born in 1952 into a Jewish family from Alsace with Eastern European roots, he studied for his degree in French at the yeshiva in Israel Netiwot and then in Jerusalem. From 1978 to 1996 he was rabbi for students. Subsequently, he was from 1997 rabbi of the Great Synagogue of Paris until 2009 he took up his new position as Chief Rabbi in succession to Joseph Sitruks.

Beginning of April 2013 reported French media over plagiarism allegations against Bernheim; he is alleged to have written off long passages from the works of other authors in his book Quarante Méditations Juives, including Jean -François Lyotard and Elie Wiesel. Even in his 15-page essay Mariage homosexual, Homoparentalité et adoption: Ce que l' on oublie souvent de dire ( " gay marriage, gay parenting and adoption: What one forgets often to say" ) were detected numerous literal acquisitions. In addition, he had manipulated his resume and invented a degree in philosophy. On April 11, 2013 Bernheim resigned.
