Gillois

Gillois is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Gillois is located on 820 m above sea level. M., about eight kilometers east of the city Champagnole (air line). The farming village extends in the Jura, in a depression at the edge of the east adjacent to the Val de Sirod plateau, near the source of Ain.

The area of ​​9.65 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the territory occupied by the plateau, the average 860 meters above sea level. M. lies. It rises to the southeast gradually, has only very small differences in relief and shows a loose structure of arable land, meadows and forests. On a hilltop in the hallway Coteau de l' Araignée is 958 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Gillois. The only river is the Ruisseau de Combe Bernard, drains the area to the Ain. In the west the municipality area dates back to the valley basin of the Val de Sirod down.

To Gillois the hamlet Gilleret include (801 m above sea level. M. ) on the hillside east of the Val de Sirod as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Gillois are Conte and La Favière in the north, and Billecul Arsure- Arsurette in the east, Bief -des- Maisons and Les Chalesmes in the south and Sirod in the West.

History

Is first mentioned in the 13th century Gillois. The place belonged in the Middle Ages to the barony of Chateau- Vilain. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The standing on a promising hill west of the village church of Gillois was built in the 17th century.

Population

With 133 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Gillois one of the smallest towns in the Jura. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 420 people were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Gillois was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and livestock village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Nozeroy to Les Planches -en- Montagne. Further road links exist with Sirod and Arsure- Arsurette.
