Gilmer County (Georgia)

The Gilmer County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ellijay, named after a nearby Indian settlement or the Indian term for " Green Earth ".

Geography

The County is located in northern Georgia and is about 35 km from the southern border of Tennessee. It has an area of 1118 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Fannin County, Dawson County, Pickens County and Murray County.

History

Gilmer County was formed on December 3, 1832 84 County of Georgia from parts of Cherokee County. It was named for George Rockingham Gilmer, a U.S. Congress Member and Governor of Georgia.
