Gilmer County (West Virginia)

Gilmer County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Glenville.

Geography

The County is located north of the geographical center of West Virginia and has an area of 881 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Doddridge County, Lewis County, Braxton County, Calhoun County and Ritchie County.

History

Gilmer County was formed on February 3, 1845 from parts of Kanawha County and Lewis County. It was named for Thomas Walker Gilmer, a member of the U.S. Congress, Secretary of the Navy and Governor of Virginia.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Gilmer County 7,160 people in 2,768 households and 1,862 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer.
