Gilmer County (West Virginia)
Gilmer County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Glenville.
Geography
The County is located north of the geographical center of West Virginia and has an area of 881 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Doddridge County, Lewis County, Braxton County, Calhoun County and Ritchie County.
History
Gilmer County was formed on February 3, 1845 from parts of Kanawha County and Lewis County. It was named for Thomas Walker Gilmer, a member of the U.S. Congress, Secretary of the Navy and Governor of Virginia.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Gilmer County 7,160 people in 2,768 households and 1,862 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.33 percent White, 0.91 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.10 percent from other races groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.70 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,768 households out of which 28.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, 32.7 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent of all households and 12.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.92.
Based on the county the population was spread from 20.3 percent population under 18 years, 16.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 15.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 101.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 22,857, and the median income for a family was $ 28,685. Males have a median income of $ 25,497, women $ 15,353. The per capita income was $ 12,498. 20.2 percent of families and 25.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.9 percent of those 65 years.
