Gilpin County [ gɪlpən ] is an administrative unit ( county ) in the northern part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Central City

Geography

The County is located in north-central Colorado, in the front mountain range of the Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by the districts in the north Boulder, Jefferson in the East Clear Creek in the south and Grand in the West.

History

Named after William Gilpin County is one of 17 administrative units of the original 1861 created Colorado Territory and adjacent to the neighboring Clear Creek the only district, which still exists today in its former borders.
