Gimbal

The gimbal mount or gimbal bearing is a bearing in two intersecting mutually perpendicular pivot bearings.

It is used for example in ships applicable to measuring instruments or other objects. Here, the focus of the object to be stored is below the intersection of the axes of rotation, so that the object does not follow a slope of its environment.

A common application is the gimbal of a rotating mass ( centrifugal ) in a gyroscope.

The same technical principle is applied in the universal joint between two mutually pivotable shafts.

The gimbal is named after Gerolamo Cardano (1501-1576), who first described it.

History

A gimbal was probably used as early as 280-220 BC by Philo of Byzantium, to hang an inkwell. So they met the danger, it overturn accidentally. In China, can the gimbal 180 AD prove. That she was known in the Middle Ages, proves a drawing Villard de Honnecourt ( see picture). Leonardo da Vinci proposed the gimbal for a ship's compass.

Operation and applications

In the outer fixed part (often, but not necessarily a ring ), two rings - the axes mutually offset by 90 degrees - in one another rotatably mounted. The object to be stored is attached to the innermost ring.

In galleys the stove plates are mounted on gimbals. Their focus is kept so low by additional masses that they stay with patch pots with him leaning to ship horizontally, not slip or even fall over. The horizontal position is retained even when proposed by Leonardo da Vinci suspension of a ship's compass obtained (see top image).

One of the gyro instruments is the gyrocompass. The gyroscope axis forms with the inner gimbal a right angle ( see picture). The gimbal allows the gyro maintains its direction in space in the direction of change of the vehicle (ship, aircraft ). At the direction of the gyro axis, the initial direction of the vehicle remains permanently legible.

An electronic Gimbal for example, the police find help Volatile or to find the life-saving station near a ski accident skiers and bring quickly as possible to the nearest hospital. It is used as a stabilization of the camera on the front of the helicopter use. It also serves as a stabilizer in the television industry, for example, as a substitute of a Steadicam or camera drones.
