Gimli (Manitoba)

Gimli is a municipality in Manitoba, Canada, on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. The town has 5,797 inhabitants ( 2006) and lies about 80 km north of the city of Winnipeg. Gimli was founded in October 1875. The town in 1983 was awarded by the local emergency landing of a Boeing 767 temporary national attention (see: Air Canada Flight 143).

Icelandic Culture

In the Waterfront Centre, the New Iceland Heritage Museum ( NIHM ). After 1971, the Canadian Forces Base had been abandoned, and many jobs were lost, was formed in 1972, the Icelandic Cultural Corporation. 1974 opened its doors to the museum. It offered in three rooms exhibitions of Icelandic and Ukrainian immigration and fishing. In 1994, the city's museum. 1995 it was decided, instead of a typical local museum to establish a museum with the collection area Icelandic culture.
