Gio people

The Yakuba, Dan or Gio, are a West African nation that lives in the Ivory Coast and Liberia.

In Ivory Coast, 800,000 Yakuba - Dan, where they represent 5.9 percent of the population. In Liberia, however, 250,000 Gio- Dan live. In total, there are over a million Yakuba - Gio in West Africa. They speak the language Dan.

The Dan live in the Ivory Coast in the central west of the country, especially around the town of Man. They are among the Mandevölkern.

Overall, the ethnic group of the Yakuba divided into two tribes:

  • The Danmenu in the north near the massifs of Dan and of Man.
  • The Butjulömenu in the south on the upper plateau.
