Giorgi Asanidze

Giorgi Assanidse (Georgian გიორგი ასანიძე; born August 30, 1975 in Sachkhere ) is a Georgian weightlifter. He was Olympic champion in 2004 in Athens in the light heavyweight (up to 85 kg body weight).

Career

Giorgi Assanidse began as a teenager in Tbilisi with the weight lifting. Even at age 17 he came to the Georgian national junior team of weightlifters and was supervised as an exceptional talent by coach Ivan Grikurovi.

In 1994 he started for the first time at an international championship, the European Junior Championships in Rome, and took it in a light heavyweight at 340 kg in the same excellent 2nd place. In the same year he was employed in the Senior World Championships in Istanbul. He grew up here in the light heavyweight division at 347.5 kg, but only for 16th place ranged in the fierce competition.

In 1995, he finished second at the Junior European Championships in Beersheba in Israel in the light heavyweight with 350 kg and again after he finished at the European Championship in Warsaw with 347.5 kg to 8th place. In the autumn of 1995, he celebrated at the World Junior Championship, which also took place in Warsaw, his biggest success so far. He was with 360 kg ( 165 kg snatch, 195 kg pushing ) vies Junior World Champion. However, soon afterwards came the rude awakening for him, because the time taken at this event doping sample was positive. The world champion Junior was taken from him and he has been banned for doping for two years.

In 1998, he launched after his suspension at the European Championships in Riesa. He had in the middleweight (up to 77 kg body weight) abtrainiert and reached 360 kg 2nd place. behind Slatan Wanew from Bulgaria, who brought the same load on the high route, itself, however, was a little easier.

In the 1999 World Cup in Athens Giorgi Assanidse started again in light heavyweight. He rose thereby to 377.5 kg. However, this power was only enough for sixth place. In very great shape it presented itself at the 2000 European Championships in Sofia. He reached in the light heavyweight division in a duel 390 kg in the snatch and made with 181 kg and a new world record. As one of the favorites so he went to the Olympics this year to Sydney. In Sydney, he delivered himself with the double Olympic champion Pyrros Dimas of Greece and Marc Huster from Germany a thrilling three-way battle. These three lifters reached in a duel each 390 kg. The medals so had to be allocated according to the body weight.

Dimas was the lightest and received his third gold medal, Marc Huster, who was 160 g heavier than Dimas, got the silver medal and Giorgi Assanidse received, as the most severe of the three athletes, the bronze medal. It had Giorgi Assanidse in hand, to win the gold medal. He had in fact reached 390 kg in the total, according to its first impact test at 210 kg. He then increased to 215 kg and he failed twice. Had he taken 212.5 kg, which he would have done more than 215 kg, he would have been Olympic champion.

In the years 2001 and 2002, Giorgi Assanidse was after the resignation of Pyrros Dimas and Marc Huster the dominant figure on the stage lift in the light heavyweight division. It was founded in 2001 in Trenčín European Champion and World Champion in Antalya. 2002 came in Antalya another European title added in single combat. Only in the 2002 World Cup in Warsaw, he was surprised by the Bulgarians Slatan Wanew. Wanew, basically a middleweight, was before his last attempt in pushing in a duel to 10 kg behind Assanidse and managed the near-impossible and came with 217.5 kg world record. He had 385 kg in single combat as Assanidse and was due to its lighter body weight before this World Champion.

In 2003 Giorgi Assanidse was injured and was able to start the whole year in any international championship. With great training deficit, he participated in the 2004 at the European Championships in Kiev, reaching the light heavyweight division with 360 kg in only the 12th Place. In the few months until the Olympic Games in Athens, he managed however to bring themselves back into shape. He scored in Athens 382.5 kg in single combat, ranging to Olympic victory by Andrei Rybakou from Belarus and a comeback tempting Pyrros Dimas.

Giorgi Assanidse declared after his retirement from active sports lifter. In 2007, he attempted a comeback, which surprisingly went wrong at the World Championships in Chiang Mai in Thailand. He managed in the snatch 160 kg (12th place) and had in pushing three failed attempts with 187 kg. He therefore remained unplaced.

In addition to the championships and winning medals Giorgi Assanidse also won in the individual disciplines tearing and pushing a variety of titles and medals. See individual medals.

Giorgi Assanidse closed in 1996, a university degree at the State. Academy from Tbilisi for Physical Education and Sport of Georgia. After his playing days, he worked temporarily in the Georgian Defense Ministry. Now he is as an independent delegate member of the Parliament of Georgia and a member of the Science, Culture and Sports Committee.
