Giorgi Baramidze

Giorgi Baramidze (Georgian გიორგი ბარამიძე; born January 5, 1968 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian politician ( National Movement - Democrats ). The chemistry technologist was from June 10th to December 14th 2004 Minister of Defence of Georgia. Since 15 December 2004, he is Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Euro -Atlantic integration.

Life

Baramidze studied chemical technology at the Georgian Polytechnic Institute in Tbilisi, the end of the 1980s was a founder and leader of the student movement there. In 1992 he completed his studies in engineering. In 1995 he studied at the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch -Partenkirchen. 1998 and 1999 he was a research associate at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD ) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC

1990 Baramidze was co-founder of the Green Party of Georgia, 1991 and 1992 its director. In 1993 he united with his party and the followers of Eduard Shevardnadze President of Georgian Citizens Union, became their vice chairman. In 1995 and 1996 he served as Secretary-General. In 2002, he joined the opposition party United Democrats and was elected there to the Board under Zurab Zhvania.

From 1992 to 2003 he was on three legislative periods in the Georgian Parliament. He was secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights and National Minorities (1992-1995), Chairman of the Committee of Inquiry corruption (1995-1999) and Chairman of the Defence Committee ( 1999-2003). He was leader of the Union citizen, in May 2002, leader of the newly formed United Democratic 1996.

In November 2003 he won as candidate of the Burjanadze - Democrats a direct mandate in the constituency Tbilisi- Didube. On 17 February 2004, the Parliament elected him President Mikheil Saakashvili on a proposal first to the Home Secretary. Baramidze played a leading role in resolving the conflict with Adjara, which led to the replacement of the ruler Aslan Abashidze. On 10 June 2004 he became minister of defense of his country. On 15 December 2004 President Saakashvili appointed him Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for Euro -Atlantic integration. After the death of Zurab Zhvania he was from 3 to February 17, 2005 Office of the Prime Minister of Georgia.

Baramidze is a critic of Russian policy in the South Caucasus. In December 2000, he declared that Georgia must do everything possible to extend the cooperation with NATO, even if Russia would annoy.

Baramidze is married and has one daughter. He speaks English, Russian and French.
