Giorgi Gogshelidze

Giorgi Gogschelidse (Georgian გიორგი გოგშელიძე; born November 7, 1979 in Gori ) is a Georgian wrestler who first started for Russia and wrestles for Georgia since 2006. He was world champion in 2001 in the light heavyweight ( class up to 96 kg body weight) in free style.

Career

Giorgi Gogschelidse learned since 1988 in his native Georgia wrestling. He concentrated on the free style. Already in the junior age but he chose to start at international championships for Russia. He was therefore nominally a member of the Russian army, but is from the beginning of his career to professional wrestler. At a size of 1.83 meters and a weight of about 98 kg, it can without major weight problems heavyweight wrestling.

His debut at international championships he gave at the Junior World Cup 1998 in Las Vegas, where he won the light heavyweight division. He was in Riga Junior European Champion and in Sydney in turn junior world champion at light heavyweight in 1999. He also won at the Military World Championships 1999 at heavyweight before Arawat Sabejew from Germany and Sergei Prjadun from Ukraine.

In 2001 he competed at the European Championship in Budapest for Russia. In the light heavyweight division, he lost his fight for victory against Georgian compatriot Luka Eldari Kurtanidse on points, finishing in 2nd place. An even bigger success then succeeded him at the World Championships the same year in Sofia. With five victories he won there superior to the world title. He defeated among others, thereby the strong Iranian Alireza Heidari, Wadym Tassoew from the Ukraine and in the final Krassimir Kotschnew from Bulgaria.

In 2002 Giorgi Gogschelidse just launched at the World Championships in Tehran. After two victories he met while in his third fight on Eldari Luka Kurtanidse, against whom he defeated 3-1 points. That left only the 6th place for him.

In the years 2003, 2004 and 2005, Georgi Gogschelidse then could no longer qualify for the international championships in Russia. Especially Chadschimurad Gazalow from the neighboring North Ossetia Georgia, who also competed for Russia, it took these starting places away. A remarkable victory he recorded, however, still in Moscow in 2003, when he won the so-called " FILA Absolute Championship " and thereby defeated world class wrestlers like Alexis Rodríguez Valera from Cuba, Wadym Tassoew, Daniel Cormier in the U.S. and Çakiroglu Fatih from Turkey. The importance of World Championships or even the Olympic Games has not this tournament though. 2005 Georgi Gogschelidse also wrestled for one season in the Iranian Professional League of freestyle wrestler.

In 2006, Giorgi Gogschelidse decided after the resignation of Eldari Luka Kurtanidse again for his home country of Georgia to start, probably most of all, therefore, to go Chadschimurad Gazalow in Russia out of the way. He belonged to Dinamo Tbilisi and was trained by Nugzar Schireli. With this change also successes came right back to, even though he lost against each Chadschimurad Gazalow both at the European Championships in Moscow in 2006 and at the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou. In Moscow he nevertheless came to 3rd place and in Guangzhou to 2nd place.

At the European Championships in 2007 in Sofia defeated Giorgi Gogschelidse Schirwani Muradov, a starting for Russia Dagestan and came to 3rd place. At the World Championships this year in Baku, he had early on suffered a surprising loss to the starting Kyrgyzstan Russians Alexei Krupniakow. Since Krupniakow not reached the final of the tournament was over for Gogschelidse after this defeat and he finished only 10th place.

The Olympics began in 2008 for Giorgi Gogschelidse then with a great success at the European Championships in Tampere. after three lighter successes he met in the semifinals on Chadschimurad Gazalow and defeated this just 5-4 points. He had reached the final, which he certainly won against Georgi Tibilow from Ukraine 3-0 points. It will be interesting how the duel against Gogschelidse Gatsalow at the Olympic Games in Beijing will go out.
