Giorgio Borġ Olivier

George Borġ Olivier ( born July 5, 1911 in Valletta, † October 29, 1980 in Sliema / Malta ) was a Maltese politician and twice Prime Minister of Malta.

Biography

Study and first political activities

1937 ended Borġ Olivier the study of law at the Royal University of Malta with a Doctor of Law. He then served in 1939 in the Government and in 1947 elected to the Legislative Assembly after the takeover of government responsibility in 1947.

First term as prime minister ( 1951-1955 )

On September 26, 1950, he was appointed by Enrico Mizzi to the Minister of Labour, rehabilitation and education in his cabinet. As Mizzi already died on 20 December 1950 Borġ Olivier became his successor as Prime Minister and Chairman of the Nationalist Party. After the parliamentary election, 1951, he then formed a coalition government with the Labour Party. However, 1955 was subject to the NP in the general election against the Labour Party, which could form the government now under its chairman Dom Mintoff. He was then to 1958 leader of the opposition in Parliament.

Second term as prime minister (1962 to 1971) and independence of Malta

When Mintoff on April 26, 1958 resigned, this led to a four-year constitutional crisis and to the fact that the Office of the Prime Minister remained vacant until March 3, 1962. This Malta fell back in the original colonial status. Then Borġ Olivier was prime minister again and took over both the Ministries of Economic Planning and Finance. After the confirmation of independence efforts by a referendum Malta gained independence during his tenure on September 21, 1964. Subsequently, he was also Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta and continued in this position his political philosophy of a moderate and pro-Western policy by. In the parliamentary election in March 1966, he was then re-elected. Borġ Olivier was convinced that economic and defense policy interests of Malta could best be put through a strong connection to the previous colonial power Britain. This policy failed in terms of economic hopes but ultimately due to the reduction in UK defense spending.

On June 17, 1971, the NP subject under Borġ Olivier in the parliamentary elections of LP under Mintoff, Malta 1974 finally declared a republic.

Borg Olivier came back in 1976 as chairman of the Nationalist Party, but remained a member of Parliament until his death.

Private

Dr G. Borg Olivier was married to Alexandra Mattei since 1943 and had a daughter Angela and two sons, Alexander and Peter.
