Giorgio Giacomelli

Giorgio Giacomelli ( born January 25, 1930 in Milan ) is an Italian diplomat.

Life

Giorgio Giacomelli is Master of Law at the University of Padua. He studied at the University of Cambridge and at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, joined the Foreign Service in 1956 and was in Madrid, Paris, and Leopoldville busy. From January 1964 to October 1966 he was chargé d'affaires in New Delhi.

In 1972 he headed the department of development cooperation at the Foreign Ministry. From 1973 to 1976 he was ambassador in Mogadishu, Somalia from 1976 to 1980 he was ambassador in Damascus.

Between 1981 and 1985 he headed the department of Development Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was commissioner for the United Nations Relief for Palestine Refugees in the Near East from October 1985 to February 1991. From February 1991 to September 1997 he was Managing Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. From 1992 to September 1997, he headed the United Nations Office in Vienna.

From December 1999 to March 2001, was the Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories of Palestine, the UN Human Rights Commission. Since July 2002, Giacomelli Chairman of the non-profit organization HYDROAID, for further training in the field of water infrastructure and services, which is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Municipality of Piedmont, banks and local institutions. In February 2006 Giacomelli was appointed ( Advisory Committee on Drinking Water and Sanitation Technology UNSGAB ) by Kofi Annan in the UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.
