Giorgio Gusmini

Giorgio Cardinal Gusmini ( born December 9, 1855 in Gazzaniga, Bergamo, Italy Province; † August 24, 1921 in Bologna) was Archbishop of Bologna.

Life

Giorgio Gusmini studied in Bergamo, Rome and Padua, and a doctorate in Catholic theology, philosophy and literature. On September 21, 1878, he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1878 to 1880 he worked as a chaplain in the Diocese of Bergamo, 1880-1882, he was exempted for the purpose of further studies. From 1882 to 1900 he worked in Celena and Bergamo as a teacher and in the formation of priests. He was one of the founders of the Society of Catholic Universities. In 1901 he received the appointment as the archpriest in Clusone. He headed to 1910 additionally the parish St. Alexander in Colonna and worked for the Catholic Action. He was also co-editor of a Catholic newspaper.

1910 he was appointed by Pope Pius X. Bishop of Foligno, 1914 Giorgio Gusmini Archbishop of Bologna. 1915 took him Pope Benedict XV. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Susanna in the College of Cardinals. Giorgio Gusmini died on 24 August 1921 in Bologna, and was buried in the local Kartäuserfriedhof. In 1923 his remains were transferred to the Cathedral of Bologna.
