Giorgio Orsoni

Giorgio Orsoni ( born August 29, 1946 in Venice ) is an Italian lawyer and since April 2010 the mayor of Venice.

Life

University of Venice

1972 Orsoni lawyer and professor of administrative law at the University of Venice, the Università Ca ' Foscari, where he is also scientific director of the Masters of Environmental Law.

Airport, legal adviser of the Ministry of Public Works

In addition to his activities as a lawyer and as a director in various professional bodies, he was from 1997 to 2003 president of the SAVE Engineering SpA, an engineering company at Marco Polo airport on the mainland part of Venice. 1996 to 1998 he worked as a legal adviser to the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministerio dei Lavori Public Gardens.

Cultural and political activity

From 2000 to 2003 he was an advisor to the management of the Biennale. Since 2005 he has been President of the Compagnia della Vela, one of the old-established rowing companies, which is a great honor in Venice. Currently (2010) he is Primo Procuratore di San Marco and Vice- President of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, a cultural foundation, which is resident on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

After the initial term of office of the mayor Massimo Cacciari, which ended in 2000, he was Assessore al Patrimonio, and was also responsible for institutional relations of the municipality.

Mayor

Supported by the Agency for Political Communication Venture idea he won the election for mayor of Venice in a center-left coalition against the candidate of Prime Minister Berlusconi. In the election, he won 75 403 votes, representing a share of 51.13 %. On his opponent Renato Brunetta accounted for 62 833 exactly 42.6 % of the vote. Since April 8, 2010 Orsoni is so syndic. In addition to numerous other functions, he took over the presidency of the Foundation so that La Fenice.

Orsonis voters mainly live on the mainland. About 70 % of his voters are recruited from there, about 10% live on the islands, the rest of the Centro Storico, the historic district of Venice.

Since September 2010 Orsoni by a working group of cities northeast of Italy in mind to run for 2019 as European Capital of Culture.
