Giorgio Parisi

Giorgio Parisi ( * August 4, 1948 in Rome ) is an Italian physicist.

Life and work

Parisi graduated in 1970 to study physics at the University La Sapienza in Rome from. His supervisor was Nicola Cabibbo. Subsequently he worked until 1981 as a researcher at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, which he left for research at Columbia University ( 1973-1974 ), the Institute des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques ( 1976-1977 ) and the École Normale Supérieure (1977-1978 ). 1981 to 1992 he was Vergata Professor of theoretical physics at the University of Tor. Since 1992 he is professor of quantum physics at the La Sapienza.

Parisi works on different branches of physics, as high energy physics, quantum chromodynamics, the theory of phase transitions, statistical mechanics, mathematical physics, string theory and the spin glass. In studies of the scale violation ( engl. scaling violation ) in deep inelastic scattering, he presented Guido Altarelli the Altarelli - Parisi equation on. Later he studied with the help of the supercomputer 100 APE (Array Processor Experiment, also Italian bee) quantum chromodynamics on the lattice. By using the so-called quenched approximation, ie neglecting the vacuum polarization, it was possible to calculate the mass spectrum of hadrons to 10 percent accurate.

In the theory of phase transitions Parisi developed a new method for the calculation of critical indices and critical exponents. He examined spin- glasses and found with the revival of the mathematical notion of ultrametric structure of complex systems approaches that can be used in biology ( neural networks, convolution of copolymers, immunity) and combinatorial optimization. He also presented a stochastic differential equation for the growth of random accumulations, the Kardar - Parisi - Zhang equation ( KPZ ).

He is married and has two children.
