Gotthard Bahn

Giornico not benefited in spite of its own station as other communities from the construction of the Gotthard Railway and its operation since 1882. This is probably due to the original position of the station two kilometers outside the village, so the village was bypassed. The partial distances to the neighboring stations Lavorgo and Bodio with 26.8 and 27 ‰ have the largest gradients of the Gotthard Railway. Nevertheless, this hardly differ from the maximum slopes of the other sections on the south ramp, which are almost exclusively at 26 ‰. The slope of the line can thus be excluded as a reason for the "failure " of the station Giornico. The later relocation of the station more to the center of the community towards could not stop the trend; the newer station was closed later. The lines of the Gotthard railway line directly above Giornico is characterized by two consecutive spiral tunnel ( Pianotondo and Travi spiral tunnel ) on the left side of the Ticino valley, which are collectively referred to as Biaschina loops.
