Gious Kampos

Gious Kambos (Greek Γιους Κάμπος ) is about 2.5 square kilometers plateau at about 800 meters altitude above the sea in central Crete. The intensive agricultural plateau belongs to the municipality of Agios Vasilios in the Regional District of Rethymno.

Location

On the east - west axis of the plateau lies exactly halfway between the Cretan villages Spili and Gerakari. The connecting road between the two towns leads north past her, but did not affected. In the south of the plain of Mount Agio Pneuma and the western foothills of Kedros is bounded in the north by the slopes of Soros. Between the two southern mountains introduces access from Kissos over a pass to the plane. The plateau is located on the border between the two traditional districts ( dioceses ) Agios Basileos and Syvritos ( Nefs Amari ), so the Amari Basin. Name

The name Gious Kambos (pronounced, Jus Kambos ' ) means field of Io '. Io ( ancient Greek Ἰώ ) was one of the many lovers of Zeus, she was transformed by him into a cow in order to hide her from his wife Hera.

Trivia

The Gious Kambos level was the scene of one of the youngest Vendette in Crete: In August 2008, it came here to an armed clash of two families from Kissos and from Gerakari over grazing rights. A shepherd was killed, several others injured in the hospitals of Rethymno and Chania admitted, after they had been erstversorgt in the Health Center in Spili.
