Giovanni Antonio Amato

Giovanni Antonio Amato ( called il Vecchio = the Elder) (* around 1475 in Naples, † 1555 ) was an Italian painter, active in Naples.

To him no contemporary documents are known, our knowledge of it are mainly due to his biography at Bernardo de Dominici.

He then said to have been a student of a certain Silvestro Bruno, who is often identified with Silvestro Buono, but this chronological reasons (* 1520 ) is not possible. His style is to have been influenced by Perugino. He made paintings and frescoes in several churches in Naples ( not received all or detectable): SS Severino e Sossio ( " Tavola degli Arcangeli " ), S. Nicola ( destroyed by fire ), S. Domenico Maggiore, S. Caterian, S. Potito all'Anticaglia, S. Pietro ad Aram, S. Maria del Carmine, S. Lorenzo Maggiore and the Cathedral of S. Gennaro.

The painter Giovanni Antonio Amato il Giovane was supposed to be his nephew and pupil. Among his students are, inter alia, Giovanni Bernardo Lama, Giovanni Vincenzo Corso Pietro Negroni and Cesare Turco counted.
