Giovanni Antonio Viscardi

Giovanni Antonio Viscardi (* December 27 1645 in San Vittore Roveredo, † September 9, 1713 in Munich) was an Italian- gray Graubünden architect of Baroque, who worked mainly in Bavaria.

Life

On December 27, 1645 Viscardi was baptized in San Vittore Roveredo in the Italian-speaking part of the Grisons, Ticino, near the border. Many of his ancestors, like his grandfather or his great-grandfather Giovanni Antonio Bartolomeo worked demonstrably since the mid-16th century as a master mason, city foreman or builder north of the Alps of Bavaria into Styria, and even to Mainz. He spent his apprenticeship with his father, Bartolomeo, who was in the service of the Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria.

When he was not quite 30 years old, he helped as Parlier of the electoral Bavarian court architect Enrico Zuccalli in transforming the Altöttinger pilgrimage church of St. Magdalene. A year later he married in San Vittore and took his young wife to Munich, where he became the Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria Hofmaurermeister 1678. Despite initially good relationship with his superiors Zuccalli, but he was dismissed in 1689 after a dispute with the builder Oberhof. His body was Zuccallis son Trubillio.

In the second phase of his career Viscardi appears largely as a freelance architect and developed a lively and successful work in and around Munich. For the Cistercian abbey in Fürstenfeld he designed the monastery ( Monastery Fürstenfeld ). Also for numerous other religious communities, noble and middle-class clients Viscardi works at this time.

He built the Munich Salesianerinnenkirche the construction of the monastery, the Benedictine Metten Abbey, he builds the Sanctuary Loh order, created in Landshut for the Jesuits to build the monastery, renewed hall and church of the Munich Jesuit College of St. Michael and expanded the monastery of the Benedictine to Benediktbeuren. Trivia

Situated on the famous Baroque architect recalls in Munich a short street behind the Feldherrenhalle.
