Giovanni Battista Fasolo

Giovanni Battista Fasolo (* 1598 in Asti; ? † before 1680 in Palermo ) was an Italian organist and composer.

Life

Giovanni Battista Fasolo, possibly also called Il Fasolo, was a member of the Friars Minor Franciscan Order and worked for them as organist at various churches in Italy. In 1659 he received an appointment as Kapellmeister to the Archbishop of Monreale Cathedral in Palermo, in succession of Bonaventura Rubino. He probably has occupied this position until his death.

He was a versatile composer and created next to sacred and secular vocal music also works for guitar ( one of the first in Italy ) and organ, as well as several oratorios. Especially the organ works are remarkable for the rarity of this type of music, for the Italy of his time and also their high quality. Only two of his nine published collections are not lost, another collection was probably destroyed in World War 1.
